<div itemprop="description">Barrett, Karen (Gilmour) <br /> <br />Dr. Karen Gilmour-Barrett died on August 30, 2015 at the age of 68 after a year of courageous living with cancer. Karen is survived by her husband, Craig and sons Ross (Anna) and Neil (Nadine), grandsons, James, Henry and Jessie, sister, Joan Gilmour (Paul Rosenberg) and sister-in-law Peggy Barrett (Greg Garach). She and her husband recently marked their 45th wedding anniversary. <br /> <br />Dr. Gilmour-Barrett is noted for her career as a Psychologist at the Toronto Catholic District School Board. She was known for her insights into students and her determination to ensure that students and their parents received the help they needed. Her advice was often sought by her colleagues. Dr. Gilmour-Barrett participated in many special projects at TCDSB. She was actively involved in professional issues throughout her career and contributed over many years to the working committee of the Canadian Psychological Association&rsquo;s Code of Ethics for Psychologists. <br /> <br />Dr. Gilmour-Barrett was born in Montreal and grew up in Saint John, NB. She moved to Toronto with her family at the age of 12. She attended Loretto Abbey and York University, Glendon. She obtained her PhD from University of Waterloo in 1973. She first worked at Thistletown Regional Centre as Supervisor of Child &amp; Youth Work. <br /> <br />After retiring from the TCDSB Psychology Department in 2010, she continued her study of the advances in Child and School Psychology. She delighted in sharing in the care of her two young grandsons. She and her husband, Craig, divided their time between Toronto and their home in Orillia. <br /> <br />A lifelong swimmer, Karen competed as a master swimmer with the North York Gators, Orillia OOPS, and Norseman Masters Aquatic clubs. She served for years on the executive of her professional union, APSSP. She was a long time member of the Catholic Women's League. <br /> <br />Friends may call at the Lynett funeral home, 3299 Dundas Street West on Thursday September 3rd, from 2-4 and 5-8 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held on Friday September 4th at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 1701 Bloor Street West at 11 a.m. Reception with lunch to follow immediately in the Church Hall.
