Roger "Neo" Rathebe
August 4, 1958 - May 7, 2015
Roger Rathebe’s political baptism occurred when he joined the South African Students Movement in 1974. In 1976, he was one the young lions that participated in the June 16 uprisings alongside stalwarts such as Tsietsi Mashinini, Khotso Seatlholo and others. Because of the persecution he continually faced from the South African Security Police he went into exile in Lesotho in 1977. In exile he joined the African National Congress (ANC). After his arrival in Canada in 1982, he continued with his political activism with the ANC Youth League as well as pursuing his academic studies at the University of Toronto.
Roger was a man of many priceless talents; an artist, play write and poet; an intellectual and thoughtful scholar. He will be remembered for his dry sense of humour, love of travel, adventure and environmentalism. Above all he will be remembered for his deep compassion for the ordinary man and woman.
May his soul rest in peace.
